5 Most Walkable Neighborhoods in Oklahoma City to Live in

I’ll start out by stating these disclaimers before we get into this post: Oklahoma is not generally a “walkable city”. Most people have their own personal cars, public transportation is limited, and the city itself is extremely spread out (it’s actually one of the largest US cities when you’re talking square miles).

BUT there are some districts/neighborhoods in OKC that are walkable. Walkable to me means that if you live there, you can access things like restaurants, shops, and other attractions by walking.

The Plaza District

Known best for the Plaza Walls, a rotating collection of public art displayed throughout the Plaza District, this area of OKC is one of the most diverse and vibrant neighborhoods in Oklahoma City.

The food scene is unmatched. From gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches to some of the best pizza in the city, and every cuisine in between, you’ll never leave the Plaza District hungry.

Some of my favorite spots are: The Mule, Empire Slice House, Ma Der Lao, Mexican Radio, Roxy’s Ice Cream.

If shopping is your jam, there is no shortage of options in this neighborhood. Plant stores, vintage shops, upscale clothing boutiques, and so much more.

The housing in this neighborhood is going through a bit of an upgrade. We could maybe call it gentrification, but IDK that I would totally put that label on it. There is a good mix of old and new homes in this neighborhood at this point and I hope it stays that way!

The Plaza District is also very centrally-located so while you can walk the district and find what you need, it’s only a short drive to everything else OKC has to offer!

Automobile Alley

Lots of shopping, lots of cool old buildings, lots of unique artsy stores, and lots of food, coffee, and breweries. Could there be anything better?

The housing in this area is a little more limited, with most of the options being apartment buildings. But, if your priority is living in a central and walkable location, who cares, right?

The streetcar is available in this area so if you live here and don’t have your own car, you still have public transportation options. But again, this neighborhood is super walkable and very close to Downtown OKC, Bricktown, Midtown, etc.

Speaking of Downtown OKC…

Downtown Oklahoma City

Dowwwwntownnnnn. Things will be great when you’re DOWNTOWNNNNN. That old song. No? OK.

Downtown OKC can mean different things to different people but I’m talking about the area north and west of Bricktown where all the big ass buildings are.

There are tons of attractions in this area including the Myriad Gardens and Scissortail Park, the OKC Museum of Art, and the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum.

There are too many restaurants to even count so you’ll never go hungry!

Housing in the Downtown area of this large metropolitan city is unsurprisingly limited to apartments/condos, but there’s a good variety of amenities, sizes, prices, etc. to choose from.

Uptown/23rd Street

Uptown is one of Oklahoma City’s most vibrant districts with tons of one-of-a-kind shops, restaurants, and things to do.

Check out a concert at the historic Tower Theater. Grab some unique and critically acclaimed food at Guyutes. Grab drinks on the patio at The Pump or at the Bunker Club, an atomic-bomb-themed dive bar.

Housing ranges from small bungalow-style homes to apartments. You may be able to find a larger home if you’re lucky, but because of the historic nature of this neighborhood, most homes are on the smaller side.

Also very centrally located, Uptown is an easy drive to anywhere you want to be in OKC.

Paseo Arts District

The Paseo Arts District is exactly what it sounds like, an art district!

On the National Register of Historic Places, the Paseo Arts District preserves the historic charm while highlighting new artwork from Oklahoma artists.

There are several art galleries to walk through, a bunch of food and drink options (OSO Paseo is my fave), and shopping of course!

The houses in this area are typically older homes with that historic charm. Sizes vary a bit but don’t expect some 3,000 square foot joint. There are apartments available in this area as well.
